One of the strategies he uses is that he tries to make his point through telling personal stories (anecdotes) which adds ethos to his writing because whatever he has written is from his own experience. He also uses metaphors to create a stronger connection with his readers, “Lying in bed would be an altogether perfect and supreme experience if only one had a coloured pencil long enough to draw on the ceiling.” Also, this metaphor makes the reader want to read on because the first sentence is very catchy and grabs the attention of the reader very quickly. His writing also has a poetic flow and also repetition of ideas, such as “Cleanliness is not next to godliness nowadays, for cleanliness is made essential and godliness is regarded as an offence.” He also creates common ground with the reader very well because he doesn’t talk like an “old English dude” and talks normally so we can understand him without having to look up words in the dictionary.

This letter was written by John Downe to his wife to tell her about his life in America and how she should come with the children to live with him. One of the rhetorical strategies used in this passage is that he praises the US a lot in an attempt to get his wife to come to the US, “I am to have the whole management of the factory and the master is going to board me till you come in his house.” He talks a lot about his work and how he is financially stable. Also since he uses personal anecdotes he makes his persuasion much stronger. Immersion in Love Every culture has many love stories whether it’s Romeo and Juliet, Heer and Ranjha, Mirza and Sahiba, or Antony and Cleopatra. Through these stories love is portrayed as inevitable but yet often ending in painful situations. Though lovers fall in love they aren’t always fortunate enough to stay together. Many legendary lovers are praised because of their commitment towards each other or their blind-eyed trust which is very hard to achieve in today’s world. Though we ourselves might want to be remembered as “The guy who built a palace for his wife,” we make no effort to show the same dedication as Shah Jahan has for his beloved wife. Often these paintings of lovers are inspiration of us to have trust and faith in out love so we can also become an ideal couple for others.
This picture is a beautiful portrait of two lovers, Reshma and Shera. Just like many other love stories, these two young people were madly in love but yet the circumstances and time compelled both to keep their love a secret and live a life of misery without each other. When their families, who were in the midst of a violent feudal conflict, found out about their relationship the situation for both of these star-crossed lovers got even worse. Shera committed suicide and leaving Reshma behind with nothing to live for, therefore she had no choice but to follow in the footsteps of Shera to be together at least after they die. Though they both didn’t get married and lived happily ever after, they still managed to demonstrate the strength and commitment a relationship needs to last. Furthermore, this picture seems like a dreamy scene because of the clouds in the back and the colors. First of all, the focal point of the picture is the two lovers with their eyes closed and deeply immersed in each other’s eyes. Emphasis is added to Reshma’s figure using color, shades, and minor details. In photography we were taught that if something is placed on any of the rule of thirds lines, the picture turns out much better. In this case, Reshma’s head is on the upper rule of thirds line drawing more attention to her, which creates a path of vision to the rest of her body and to Shera. Their clothes create a contrast with the rest of the picture. While the colors in the back are very dull and warm, their clothes are vibrant in color but still calm enough to still belong to the scene. Also the picture is well balanced and over crowded. On the left side are treasure chest, sword, and some sticks, which balances out with the little stones and the camel on the right side. What makes this picture more appealing is that the viewer can almost feel the love these two lovers share through their facial expressions. They both seem like they have gotten what they wanted, found their inner peace, and wish time would freeze for them.
The second picture, Beauty Awaiting her Shepherd Lover, is also a picture of two lovers waiting to unite. The woman is daydreaming about her husband coming back to see her. Often, in India after women get married, their husbands leave to other cities and towns to make money. The couple might not even get to spend any time together after their marriage before the husband has to find work. I have grown up watching many ladies in my village waiting for their husbands to return from other cities, long trips in search or work, or from other countries. My mother was one of these women who had to wait for my father to return home from Europe where he was searching for work. Even though I couldn’t find the history behind this picture, I was still able to analyze the picture historically because of my knowledge about the Indian culture. She is wearing a red bindi (“A decorative mark worn in the middle of the forehead by Indian women,”) which means that she is married and the fact that his turban is also red means that they must have gotten married recently. The viewers’ attention is caught through the use of neutral colors and balance. This picture is unevenly scaled because her face is much bigger on canvas compared to her husbands’ body. The black and white picture of her balances out with his picture in color because of the size differences. I would say that the focal point of this picture is definitely the woman’s face because it is so well defined. She is drawn as the perfect model of a typical village wife, bold and beautiful but yet well cultured. The fact that her side of the picture is black and white adds emphasis on detail on her face. Her simplicity speaks more than any other colors could have spoken. Moreover, the only thing on her face that is in color is her red bindi, which is a symbol of marriage. If she hadn’t had the bindi in color, viewers might have not been able to find out that they are married. The man on the horse creates a contrast with the background as well because the space around him is very light. Emphasis is added onto his red turban because there is clear white space around it. Also the lines draw attention to the man on the horse to show that he is traveling and also create a path of focus that leads up to him. Though the main theme for both pictures is love, the meaning is defined in different ways. Both couples can’t be labeled with, “And they lived happily ever after,” because looking at the pictures and their interpretations it’s easy to assume that life was not that easy for them. Reshma and Shera , just like the other couple in the second picture, are waiting to be together with each other. Both pictures represent the Indian culture very will in that they both include Indian elements, such as clothes, jewelry, facial features, and other objects. The phrase, longing for love, can be used to describe both pictures. Some have the patience to wait for their lover and others don’t. But in both of these pictures we see the dedication and sincerity in both men and women towards each other. Even though the females in both pictures are very beautiful, they still don’t take pride in their beauty and consider their lovers to be less than them. Both pictures show the obstacles of love and that only some are fortunate enough to attain it in life and others are given a chance to attain it in their afterlife. Though both pictures look like dreamy scenes, the first picture represents their togetherness and affection while the second symbolizes commitment and yearning. The color schemes of both pictures are very different but yet both prove to show their point to the viewers efficiently. They say that the most beautiful things are not seen but are rather felt by the heart, which might be why both of them have their eyes closed. But this might not be fully true because in the second picture the woman is imagining a very beautiful thing but with her eyes open. Whether their eyes are open or closed makes a very big difference. The viewer might not get the feeling of affection and immersion in love if the lovers in the first painting had their eyes open. Also, in the second painting the eyes are a very strong symbol for hope because she is looking straight at what she is determined and destined to receive sooner or later. If her eyes had been closed, she might not have seemed as committed or strong in her desires. Also the focal points are very different in both pictures as well the paths of vision. In the first picture the focus is on both lovers together, but in the second the focal point is only the woman. The path of the first painting leads from the lovers’ heads to their feet, while in the second one the path of vision travels from the woman to the man and then back to the woman. How can someone even think about abortion? Who gave us the right to decide who gets to live and who dies? I think it’s simply cruelty to kill an innocent child that hasn’t even come into this world. This decision isn’t about a small issue, it’s about a persons life. After taking this terrifying decision you will forever feel a guilt that you killed an innocent child and didn’t even give it an opportunity to come into this world. If it is hard for you to take care of the baby then you can always give it away for other people to adopt. Not every woman is fortunate enough to have a child, so the best you can do if you don’t want the child is to gift that unfortunate woman with your child. “Many Americans who pay taxes are opposed to abortion, therefore it’s morally wrong to use tax dollars to fund abortion.”Since the starting of a human life is when he/she is conceived, an abortion would therefore be equal to a murder. The decision you make now to abort the child will affect you mentally and physically forever. God has created us all, let him decide who dies when. 2. There can be cases where it would be best for the mother to abort the child. If she will be unable to take care of the child health wise and financially, or if she was raped, or if the child was an accident and the women isn’t willing to accept it. If the child coming into the world is going to remind you of horrible memories then you might start to blame yourself or the child. This could also lead to some physiological problems. If the doctors find out that the unborn child will be disabled or demented in any way, than it is best to abort it instead of bringing it into this world and making him/her suffer listening to other people talking about them. “Teenagers who become mothers have grim prospects for the future. They are much more likely to leave of school; receive inadequate prenatal care; rely on public assistance to raise a child; develop health problems; or end up divorced.” A woman should have choice about what she wants to do because it is her body that is going to be affected and she is the one who will have to undergo all the mental and physical changes while carrying the baby. So, it’s best to abort the child instead of bringing it into a world where you won’t be able to take care of them. “In our country, the element of power is peculiarly diffused.” I think this is true not only for Americans but for many other countries in the world. The government isn’t the only authority that holds power but rather it is spread and handed out to the media, teens, gangs, religious groups, and other authority figures. Some of us are more scared of gangs and underworld groups then the government. “Sometimes, unfortunately, it [power] exists in irregular forces– in underworld groups, criminal gangs, or informal associations of a vigilante nature–capable of terrorizing their fellow citizens in one degree or another.” After the 9/11 attack many people have become afraid of Muslims. So for some these Muslim terrorists hold power instead of the US government. Also media holds a lot of power that even to advertise political ideas or issues media is used. Political leaders use the media to express their ideas so they can reach out to millions of people. So, the media definitely holds more power then anything else in the US. But this isn’t true for very country in the world. Through news and other political shows we are informed of our current situation in Iraq and all other politically based issues. It is definitely true when he says that “in our country, the element of power is peculiarly diffused.” I can definitely say that the youth in the US has more power then the youth in India or other third world countries. I thought it was pretty funny that he was writing about a book called “how to talk about books you haven’t read,” without reading the book. The article didnt’ seem very professional to me but it was a bit confusing to follow along. I think things he understood from the book were pretty good. For example, he talked about the author and what he was like just from the picture in the back of the book. Also he talked about some things the book might include just from reading the preface. It almost felt as if this was a story, the one with pictures because of the dialouge and how he starts talking from other people’s point of view. I would definitely like to read this book! What the above segment from Percy Bysse Shelly’s “Defense of Poetry” emphasizes is the value that should be placed on the philosophers and poets of today. The work that they achieve goes beyond expectations and only makes the power of communication stronger. Today’s philosophers and poets are extremely talented and help create philosophies and ideas that go beyond our imaginations. So well do they understand human nature, the human spirit, and all of mankind’s manifestations. They provide us with motivation and inspiration. They have a huge influence on literature and need to be appreciated for the incomparable work they do. Read The Truth about Beauty and analyze it as a definition essay. 250 word blog post. How does she define the word? What claim is she making? What examples does she use to back it up? Is she right? Explain. Postrel defines beauty as something that can’t be concrete because it is different in everyone and might be unevenly distributed. It seems as if she isn’t supporting the dove ads because she doesn’t think everyone can “achieve” beauty. Dove says that, “Every girl deserves to feel beautiful just the way she is.” A person might be considered beautiful in one culture and not the other. We find different things to be attractive depending on our own definition of beauty. Postrel believes that one can’t achieve beauty with just make up and surgeries, it is a biological concept. I wouldn’t agree with her point of view because my definition of beauty is very different. I would agree more with the Dove ad because I think everyone can be “beautiful” by putting on make up. But some people can look beautiful without make up and surgeries if they have a positive look on their face and self-confidence. The dictionary definition of beauty is, “a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, esp. the sight,” which clearly shows that there is no concrete rule to decide whether someone is beautiful or not. I think when a person is beautiful inside, their beauty shines outside as well. But who are we to define beauty. We are all God’s creations. How can one be more beautiful then the other? That is my basic belief and it keeps me from judging others and making assumptions about them before I even know them. A person doesn’t carry their whole life story on their face. Kathryn, a senior at Shorewood High School, is waiting impatiently to graduate and start her new life at college. She has already been accepted and is very eager to complete the two months of high school left. Even though Kathryn is a very hard worker and has maintained a GPA of 4.0 over the four year at high school earning A’s in all the classes she has taken, her motivation to strive for an A are diminishing. Now, ever day of high school has become a drag for her. One day she walked into her English class and discovered that her teacher had given her an F on the final exam in class. She was shocked but at the same time feeling guilty. She knew that she wasn’t doing her best in other classes as well, so failing the final exam in English will cause her GPA down dramatically. She took the exam from her teacher and ran out of the classroom crying. Soon, she found out that the highest grade she got in her class was a B in Aerobics. Looking at her transcript of four years, she noticed a straight line of A’s reflecting the days of her hard work. But now, she saw no A’s at call in the second semester of senior year. Her GPA had dropped to a 3.4. One day she received a letter in the mail which made the situation even worse. She was notified from her college that due to her dramatic drop in GPA she is getting kicked out of the university. Kathryn was heartbroken and depressed. But luckily, Kathryn had a good friend who was willing to help Kathryn out in this bad situation. She encouraged and convinced Kathryn to attend the local community college for a couple of years and then transfer to a university. Even though Kathryn wasn’t very excited to attend the community college she was still happy that she could continue her studies somewhere. But more then that, she was extremely happy to have a friend like, Joyti. She was also going the community college which made Kathryn feel better because now she would be able to study with her best friend in college. The End.
The fact that Canaday used visual rhetoric terminology to analyze the two paintings made his conclusions about the painting more reliable and persuasive. The terminology adds detail by giving specific examples. For instance, in The Bellelli Family picture he says “the father is separated from the rest of the family by a series of vertical lines,” this adds detail and also urges the reader to look at the picture closely. Also he describes the attitude of the audience looking at the picture through terminology. “of all the figures, here is the simplest and strongest in silhouette, that is why return to her always, no matter how interesting the rest of the picture may be…” This definitely explained my attention was drawn towards her more then the rest of the picture. In The Peale Family, he talks about division between the two groups of the family but yet how they are still connected. There are six people in one group and four in the other but yet they are connected to each other through some sort of action, such as the fruits on the table. My analysis of the pictures was very similar to the analysis made by Canaday. But still there were some things that he pointed out which made me want to look at the picture again and then I would understand why he said what he did. The analysis was very through about each of the picture and seemed as if it answered all the questions I had about what was going on in the picture or who the characters were. I thought his conclusions and analysis of the picture were justified and reliable.
Image Credit: McCurry, Steve. PAKISTAN—an Afghan Girl At Nasir Bagh Refugee Camp Near Peshawar, 1984. Pakistan. Slate. 07 Apr. 2008 <http://todayspictures.slate.com/20080326/>. I think this movie was very interesting in how it analyzed World War II from a different perspective. A perspective from an active participant in the war, former defense secretary Robert McNamara. I would rather watch this movie about a person talking about their experience of the war instead of watching movies about the war, because the information you get from McNamara is personal to him and will also give you a different perspective on the war. He takes the whole war to the next level and doesn’t only explain what happened, when it happened, where it happened, and why it did, he talks about his personal stories and all the emotions that were attached to this war as well. The two reviews I read about The Fog of War were McNamara’s flaws are visible in ‘Fog,’ by Wesley Morris and Morris creates compelling story in McNamara portrait by Mike LaSalle. W. Morris quotes him from the movie, “What makes it immoral if you lose and not immoral if you win?” I really like the way he analyzed the whole war situations. From the quote you can tell that McNamara used rhetorical questions to also get his viewers to think deeply about the point he was making. They definitely use pathos in the video to convince the viewers of the point he is making. This is clearly shown at the part when McNamara’s gets a little teary and stutters when he talks. “McNamara’s combat strategies were cold. That coldness, however, was something he recognized and apparently struggled with, surrounding himself with feeling humanists to make up the emotional difference. He expresses a fierce admiration of Kennedy’s rationality and compassion, and he was seemingly transformed once Johnson assumed power.” I would agree with LaSalle when he says that McNamara is “passionate about his ideas and eager to communicate them.” Throughout the whole interview it felt like he a had a lot to say and the fact that he could give an interview about two hours long definitely says something about his eagerness to talk about his ideas. I would agree with both of the reviews I read because they were both very interesting to read. I chose to read the review on “The Opposite of Love.” What’s it about? This book is about a 29 year old woman and the different problems she has to deal with, but mostly her love life. She is a lawyer and is pretty much like any other woman having guy trouble. This book talk a lot of relationships and all the drama involved. While she is dealing with her crisis in her love life, she also had to deal with a lot of other problems with her family. Her mother is no longer alive, she pretends to be too busy to talk to her dad, and her grandfather is going to have dementia. So, it also discusses how you can’t just have one problem as a time to solve, but instead of lecturing on and on about that, this book talks about it with a different tone, humor. How good is it? I’m guessing the book is pretty good since the review really makes the reader want to read it. I think it would be pretty entertaining to read about how she deals with all her problems. It won’t be a sad love saga! this is the kind of humor i like as well so i think i would definitely life this book. The review also refers to specific details in the book which also makes the reader want to read it because of the details discusses. What context will help explain its place in the culture? Some might say that a career is and can only be a job a person does and enjoys it as well. The single difference between a job and a career is that, a job is done to simply done to get money, while a career is carried out so an individual is paid for doing what they love. A career requires one to obtain some sort of degree in college, The fact is; a career is something that doesn’t require numerous degrees in a subject but rather it requires dedication and passion for the work you do. Sometimes it’s dedication to finish high school to go onto college and sometimes it’s the dedication to finish college in order to obtain a job. Why does life always have to be about thinking of our next step? By doing this, we divide up life into different parts and start to lose the value of the part we are living in because we become too busy planning what we are going to do next. Our society today is trying to live in the future while in this madness to live in the future we have lost the value of the present. What are we trying to work towards? One way or another every human being wants to be happy, whether it’s by being the most successful, the richest, the most powerful, or the most beautiful. Happiness is achieved by living in the present… living now. The happiness achieved by living in the present is what defines a career. For example, a doctor who is working solely to make enough money so they won’t have trouble after retirement doesn’t have a career. But on the other hand, a doctor who treats patients on a daily basis without worrying about their next promotion or their nest egg, If there comes a point during our whole career that we begin to worry about what will happen next and making sure that we are secure with the amount of money we make, where does the part about loving what you do come in? You don’t love the fact that you are a teacher because your mind is too busy thinking about what to do tomorrow. The first third of our lives is spent thinking about what will happen in the next third and that third is spent thinking about the remaining years of our lives. Right now, for many of my classmates going to college and studying something they enjoy in college is a goal, after they have accomplished this, they will make a new goal of finding a job (career) which will help them keep their live stable. While working they will start to think about their life after retirement and start to make sure that all their needs will be met. After retirement is the time to enjoy life because there is only one more thing to look forward to…death. Insanity makes us spend more then half of our life planning for the next step. A career is doing what you love and loving every time you do it. A doctor who is worrying about his life after retirement does not have a career. A father who works solely to pay off bills does not have a career. A teacher who simply looks forward to summer vacations does not have a career. Live for today…live for now. A career isn’t solely doing something you love so you can get paid for it. It also involves a person to be aware of their surrounding so they can live for today and have a career. 1st Paragraph Graf: Read the whole thing and in a 300 word blog post explain whether you agree, disagree, or qualify the main point Mencken is making about sex differences. I would definitely agree with Mencken point of view in this article because it feels if FINALLY someone smart has written something good about women. He has totally gone against the typical stereotype about women and men. He says that women are smarter then men which I can’t agree with 100% because I don’t necessarily think they are smarter, but I would certainly say that they are definitely not less smart then them. I think both genders have different ways of being smart and equal. Which makes both of them equally powerful. If men are strong and romantic then women are also sensual and kind-hearted. “A man thinks that he is more intelligent than his wife because he can add up a column of figures more accurately, and because he understands the imbecile jargon of the stock market, and because he is able to distinguish between the ideas of rival politicians, and because he is privy to the minutiae of some sordid and degrading business or profession, say soap-selling or the law.” I loved this part of the passage because it proves that men just think they are smarter because they have to go out and work even if it just means that they sit in an office giving people orders all day. Little do they realize that it takes a smart woman to cook food, clean the house, wash the clothes, raise children, and yet be ready to welcome her dear husband home. “If the work of the average man required half the mental agility and readiness of resource of the work of the average prostitute, the average man would be constantly on the verge of starvation.” This is definitely true because again it takes more then just being a women to do the regular chores. If a man can be considered smart for going to the office then a women should be considered no less for staying home and taking care of it. Book: Hunting Mister Heartbreak For the first [about] 10 pages, i was just lost about what was going on. Just when i would think i knew what was going on, the author would change the topic and go on to something else. But the good thing is that i was able to summarize what i had read after reading the first section of the book. The main character has left some county in Europe and is on his way to America. He was describing him leaving his wife at the dock and looking at this gigantic ship which was “too big” for the dock. The last thing i read what that he was on the ship and sailing off to America. I think they had some trouble with the wind since it was messing with the ship direction and speed. 1. What was your first reaction to the article? 3. Do you feel that women are discriminated against in our society and if so how? If not, what has changed? 4. Could an equivalent essay entitled “Why I want a husband” be written? If so, what would it contain and what points would it make? I think it could address one of the biggest problem with men…ego. They think they do all the work while women take care of just little things. But hey…it’s the little things that add up to make the big differences. The general argument made by Author Peter Singer in his work Animal Liberation is that humans have no right to eat animals just because they aren’t as smart as us. More specifically, Singer argues that animals do have the ability to feel pain, it might not be the same pain as we feel, but they do have the capability of sensing pain. She/He writes, “If a being suffers, there can be no moral justification for refusing to take that suffering into consideration, and, indeed, to count it equally with the life suffering (if rough comparisons can be made) of any other being.” In this passage, Singer is suggesting that nothing gives us the right to mistreat animals because of their lower IQ’s or because they don’t feel pain. In conclusion, Singer’s belief is that animals are more or less equal to humans, so we can’t determine when a animal is feeling pain and when it isn’t. In my view, Singer is right because right. More specifically, I believe that a life is a life whether it’s in me, you, an elephant or an ant.. For example, whether I die or an ant dies, it’s still considered one less life on this earth. Although Singer might object that it’s okay to kill animals for other things, I maintain that it’s not okay to kill animals at all. Therefore, I conclude that it’s only wrong to eat animals but it’s also immoral to kill them for other needs. Questions 1) Explain the first sentence. “The happy life is to an extraordinary extent the same as the good life.” I think this just simply means that a happy life is a good life. A good life as in, being nice and committing sins only once in a while. So, for the most part a happy life is a life in which a person treats others and himself good. I think he means that our hatred towards other people or things outside of ourself disappears as soon as we have any or little interest in that thing or person. Which is true because the hatred does start to disappear as the interest starts to grow between two people or two things. 3) How effective is Russel’s simile of the billiard ball? Would he be better without it? A different metaphor? Wow! I think this sentence was pretty nicely written and it’s true. The only time the billiard ball gets to “communicate” with other balls is during collision. I think it’s a pretty nice simile to use here and was pretty effective because it definitely caught my attention. Once we do get past hatred against other people we won’t be like the billiard ball only communicating when we collide but can move on to communicating at other times besides during collisions. Citizen of the universe could mean that, such a man deserves to live the life he is living. Citizen means, “a legally recognized subject or national of a state or commonwealth, either native or naturalized,” this could mean that the man has become part of the universe. It was easier for me to read partly due to the fact that it much shorter then the other one. I think the tone of this essay was more settle then the other one. Wallace uses many rhetorical strategies to talk about the luxury cruise lines. The strategy he uses the most is repetition, of everything that is on these cruises. His whole piece seems like a long list of things he has done and seen. I think Wallance thinks that the whole idea of luxury is ridiculous and insane. There is just too much to this one little thing in life. The fact that he lists all the different things he has seen means that he might think that the whole idea is so ridiculous looking at the fact that there is so much to see and do. He starts off his piece by listing what he has seen. It really seems like one might become overwhelmed by the fact that there is more then enough to do on these cruises. “I have felt the full clothy weight of a subtropical sky. I have jumped a dozen times at the shattering, flatulence-of-the-gods-like sound of a cruise ship’s horn. I have absorbed the basics of mah-jongg and learned how to secure a life jacket over a tuxedo. I have dickered over trinkets with malnourished children…” and still the list continues. I think he was pretty insane to actually list out everything he saw and did. 1. He provides his reader with specific examples of the problems he faced and what he had to go through to solve those problems. It shows that he has played football for long enough to know about the pain it causes. Since these stories were in 50 Essays, I started out by reading them as if they were written with a serious tone. So it wasn’t until a little later in the story that I realized that the story involves humor. I could definitely relate to, “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” because having took 5 years of Spanish, I know what it’s like to make a fool of yourself in front of people talking in jumbled up sentences. I think “Lost in the Kitchen,” was pretty funny, because if one day my husband asked me how he could help me, I would probably say something similar as well, “…you can cut up the turnips.” I personally don’t think the kitchen suits men at all. They look better laying on the sofa while you are making dinner for them. Even though that does sound a bit sexist. The author of, “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” uses specific examples, such as the specific questions or answers that were involved in their conversation. Also, the author of “Lost in the Kitchen,” starts out by describing the average Thanksgiving dinner, which was pretty funny to read. The last part about how he asked his wife to read over what he had written so far, and then also included what she had thought was pretty different and interesting. John Hockenberry manages to keep a professional tone but at the same type talk in the “normal” language and everybody would understand. First of all, he’s very credible since he has worked for the program for a while, which means that he knows what he is talking about. Even after working with Dateline for so long, he dared to step up and write about what he wanted to write about instead of what he was assigned, which eventually became the reason for losing his job. But the fact that after working so long, he still had the courage to write what he wanted, shows that he has a lot of courage and will power. He says that the networks are more interested in getting more people to watch their shows instead of being more interested in what they are showing. “One might have thought that the television industry, with its history of rapid adaptation to technological change, would have become a center of innovation for the next radical transformation in communication. It did not.” People want the news to be like a movie too, interesting and fascinating. They try to avoid the truth because it’s boring and would rather watch news with action and drama. At first what seems to be a real flower full of life soon turns into a robotic, computer generated image. An attempt for a robot (the computer) to become lively. Zooming out of the flower, we notice that these computer generated flowers go through a lot of toture. First their stems are cut and are sent rolling down a tube that becomes narrower and narrower, then when they get to the end. They are shredded into little pieces and sent rolling sadly on a converyor belt until it reaches the end and falls into a silver metal pot like holder which is attached to another metal rod and travels down and stops. A stopper is pushed down into the metal container and the tortured flowers are now being squeezed to death to produce a rich red heavy liquid and is sent down the conveyor belt once again. Now, it reaches a bee waiting for it’s arrival as one would wait for their luggage at an airport. The glass of liquid stops in front of the bee and the bee drinks it up and then leans over into the glass to through it right back out. But this time instead of the rich red liquid it’s bubbly golden yellow liquid. And once again the glass is sent down the converyor belt. Again the liquid comes out to the bee and the bee waits a bit, looks at the clock, and then drinks it. A bird comes out from the clock, and now our perspective has been shifted to the bird’s perspective (black and white). We see 4-5 hexagons each with the picture of the bee about to drink the red liquid. A door opens and two cros on tredmill like wheels come rolling out with anger in their eyes. Then we get a shot of a room with candles all around it and a crow sitting on a red pillow. The crow moves out and we see that it has laid an egg. Now back to the bee and the other two crows, the bee spits out the yellow liquid onto the crows eye. The crow moves towards the bee and sprays a white gas/spray onto the bee’s face. The bee is forced to die. There are little hexagon shaped boxes that get filled in with the yellow liquid. The crows crush up the dead bee and through it down a hole. It falls slowly and lifelessly and adds onto a pile of dead bees. Now back to the egg, it starts to crack and out pops a baby crow same as the bigger crows. Now there are shots of 2 bees that are floating together as if they dont weigh anything. They come out of the tortured chamber and fly out into the world. They fly over the flowers and sit on the flowers for pollen. Now instead of the flowers being crushed, the dead bees are being crushed into the red juice like liquid. Eighner uses a lot of details and background information, to almost make you feel like you were on the journey with him. He didn’t make generalizations or give an overview but rather explained everything in detail. “Except for jeans, all my clothes came from Dumpsters. Boom boxes, candles, bedding, toilet paper, a virgin male love doll, medicine, books, a typewriter, dishes, furnishing, and change, sometimes amounting to many dollars–I acquired many things from the Dumpsters.” Also from reading his passage, he uses a lot of detail to inform the audience that he knows more about the subject that what is written. For example, “Chocolate is often discarded only because it has become discolored as the cocoa butter de-emulsified.” He could have just said that chocolate is discarded because it gets old. He really makes you feel happy about what you have by comparing it to what he had to go through. He also mentions who throws away what and at what time. First, he would wait for the pizza from the pizza store and then later for the food college students threw away. He knew when they would through things away and what they would through away. He also described how he tested carbonated drinks to check if they are okay to drink. And from this, goes on to talk about other things he drank and where he got them. It seems as if he knew the schedule for all the stores and when they empty their trash cans out. I think Buckley’s passage was very interesting. I have also thought about why we don’t complain especially when everybody knows that something is wrong. I have had times when I wanted to say something “complain,” but didn’t because i thought t wouldn’t be very nice. Buckley writes as if we are all a big group talking about problems we have dealt with, where we wanted to complain but didn’t. He uses good examples that almost everybody can relate to and talks in a very “casual” voice. It was easy to follow through as well. “And I think it is safe to assume that everyone was expecting someone else to take the initiative in going back to speak to the manager.” This is exactly what I do, or my friends, or my classmates, we all wait for someone else to take the initiative to speak up. Baldwin on the other side was more formal. His writing seemed more “ENGLISHY.” I really liked his line, “Any writer, I suppose, feels that the world into which he was born is nothing less than a conspiracy against the cultivation of his talent–which attitude certainly has a great deal to support it.” This is probably why we all get jealous of each other’s success or try to hide our success from others because we are afraid they will steal it from us. I think she story was a good combination of telling the facts and events that took place along with the mix of sharing her feelings about what happened. It’s sometimes boring if the writer just tells you a story from their past without their input about how they felt about it. “But I remember holding the pistol only made me feel small. It was so heavy in my hand.” In this sentence for example, she tells us that she held a gun along with the fact that it was heavy for her and made her feel small. This essay seemed a little confusing to me because I can’t quite figure out the voice behind the writing. Her last few sentences of the passage were very powerful and made the reader think…. think deeply. Also, since she has handled guns and grown up in a family where guns were lying around the house all the time, we can assume that the writer has been through a lot. Or that she has seen more then she should have as a child, which might have made her thoughts more mature then her age. What did you change your mind about in 2007? More than just changing my mind about something in 2007, I realized and learned a very big lesson of my life. People do what they want, nobody has time for you because they have their own problems, so to an extent it’s best to keep your things to yourself. At first people will be there to listen to you and care about you or at least act like they do. But sooner or later your problems just become a drag for them and that’s the time when it’s best to start keeping things to yourself. People change, situations change, circumstances change, and time changes, it’s best to change our stories with time so they don’t become a burden on you or your friends and family. So, my big lesson 2007 is, people got their own problems to worry about so why should I bother them with mine? Nobody cares. From: The Edge Electronic Mail I looked at “The Corner on National Review Online” (NRO). Right when you get to the website, it looks like a newspaper website, similar to kiro7, king5, or komo4. They have a picture of a guy looking pretty well educated since he has glasses and is wearing a suit. Also they have ad “For the Troops,” which means that they are updated on world issues and also their posts show that they are very involved with politics. I don’t know why people have so much time to waste, on blogs but i guess these people have a lot of time on their hands. I didn’t figure out which side of the political spectrum they were on, seemed to me as if they just talk about any topic related to politics. The second blog i looked at was the “Daily Kos: State of the Nation” — First, the title doesn’t make any sense to me, what’s kos? When i first saw the blog, i saw that behind their title they had a picture of a guy holding a flag, which obviously means this is a political blog that has to do with our government since it’s the American flag. Also, to the right it said “Advertise on the Liberal Blog Advertising Network.” meaning that this is a blog or Liberals. They have a lot of posts, comments, and ads, and it seems as if this website is pretty up to date. I think the thing that grabs a readers attention the most is the American Flag and also looking at all the comments people post, seems like a very active post. Give examples of the types of advice and example Presentation Zen uses. “A blank screen from time to time also makes images stronger when they do appear.” “critique yourself, don’t put unnecessary items” “Less effect and more more mean” “keep is simple” “be confident and don’t up your slide as a ’safety blanket’” What kind of persona does the author of the blog present? He seems like a guy who isn’t trying to argue with people but rather is trying to compare, contrast, and draw conclusions from both presentation styles. But still he’s a little biased since he is taking sides and doesn’t really point out any good things about Gates. Jobs is more confident and not very intimidated by the audience. The fact that Jobs can have a blank screen and talk about it feeling comfortable in front of an audience shows is self-confidence. How could PZ’s advice help you in your speech? You want to make the maximum effect with minimum means. So sometimes less is more. DON’T HAVE BULLET POINTS!!!! This article was full of logos and states many facts that might overwhelm a reader. It failed to persuade people using pathos, there were some but the majority of the article was logos. He says that diversity is destroying the nation and we need to do something about it NOW! He asks many rhetorical questions like, “Is Britain a better, stronger nation now that London is Londonistan, madrassas defend the London bombers and race riots are common in the industrial north? If diversity is a strength, why do Scots wish to follow the Irish and secede?” He also uses post hoc and anecdotal, because some of the arguments he presents have no correlation with his facts. He starts off by saying that America is a great nation because it is diverse. It is beautiful because it is diverse. But later on shifts his whole opinion and says that diversity will not UNITE us but will rather DESTROY us. “That America is gone forever.” This phrase really makes the reader sad and makes them want to do something about diversity. Also it could encourage people to keep reading on to find out what they can do. He seems like a credible author because it looks like he actually knows what he is saying. He’s not only just stating facts but is also reflecting on them and expanding on those facts. 1.) Teachers give too much homework without realizing that their students have a life of their own. It’s hard for many students to get their homework done with enough time left to get a good night’s sleep. So, teachers need to lower the amount of homework they give. 2.) I told my sister that she could probably ask my mom about going out tonight and she would most likely say yes, since she has been saying no to most of the stuff the rest of us ask her. She probably feels bad about not letting us do things we want, so my sister has a very good chance of being able to go out tonight. 3.) I thought I did the logical fallicies homework correctly. When I showed it to Mr. Stearns the next day he humiliated me in front of everyone by saying that I was wrong. So I guess, I did my homework incorrectly. “If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind. Were an opinion a personal possession of no value except to the owner; if to be obstructed in the enjoyment of it were simply a private injury, it would make some difference whether the injury was inflicted only on a few persons or on many. But the peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.” — On Liberty, John Stuart Mill If everybody except for one person in the world had the same opinion, but except that 1 person has a different opinion. The whole group can’t tell the one person that they dont have the right to their own opinion. everybody should be able to say what they want and one person is entitled to his own opinion and the society can’t silence him. If only the person who has the opinion gained from their opinion, if the loss of the right to an opinion hurt only one person would be less “hurtful” of an injury comapred to if more people were at loss. When we stop a person from having their own opinion then we will all be the same, almost like robots. We also take away that opinion from future generations. The people who disagree with an opinion will be more hurt then the person who has that opinion. He uses the cause and effect idea to show that if this happens then this would happen. He also uses good ethos to create good credibility through his language and sentence structure. Logos (logic): It was the year of the ballot or the bullet. He also stated some facts when he talked about how he is a Muslim Minister and Dr. King and a few others are Christian Ministers. X states that, “the man who’s controlling the stores in our community is a man who doesn’t look like we do. He’s a man who doesn’t even live in the community,” which shows a part of the cause why they need to have this bullet or ballot action. “You wouldn’t be in this country if some enemy hadn’t kidnapped you and brought you here,” this is a fact and we have learned this in the Black history about how blacks were brought to the US as slaves. He talks about how “second class citizenship is nothing but 20th century slavery,” so they aren’t free they are just modernized slaves. Summary: He’s trying to say that we have a hard time making a society so we need to create a government for ourselves to keep us in line with laws and rules. They can’t get together and work together so they try to create a government system. The work needs to be split up between everybody instead of just putting all the work on one person. Logical Argumentation: CLAIM: Having a society is better then a government. Rhetorical Stratigies: He uses metaphors like, “Government, like dress, is the badge of lost innocence” comparing government to the badge of lost innocence. He also uses an anecdote about group of people making a society. He doesn’t try to create common ground because he’s assuming that we know what he’s talking about. Also uses analogy to compare what he’s talking about to another situation. “Freedom’s Just Another Word” by Anna Quindlin Man is subject to innumerable pains and sorrows by the very condition of humanity, enough in life, we are continually adding grief to grief, and aggravating the common calamity by our cruel treatment of one another. - - A person is already faced with enough pains and sorrows in life, and he keeps on adding more pain and grief through his treatment to another person. Every man’s natural weight of afflictions is still made more heavy by the envy, malice, treachery, or injustice of his neighbour. Every person becomes more evil-minded and vile through envy, treachery, and the injustices he faces from his soicety. At the same time that the storm beats upon the whole species, we are falling foul upon one another. But at the same time, this is not about one person, this is about all of man kind, we are all becoming ill with this curse. Half the misery of human life might be extinguished, would men alleviate the general curse they lie under, by mutual offices of compassion, benevolence and humanity. Some of our misery and pain could come to an end, but only if we stop with our shameful acts, will man become nice to another man for the sake of humanity? There is nothing therefore which we ought more to encourage in ourselves and others, than that disposition of mind which in our language goes under the title of good-nature. We can only encourage good behavior with one another and live naturally the way we were meant to live. –Joseph Addison, The Spectator, Sept. 13, 1711 in: The Works of Joseph Addison vol. 1, p. 251 (Harper’s ed. 1850). How? Why? When? Who? - - . A good man is hard to find. What we see or hear is not always the truth. It’s normal and now a tradition to try to ruin a candidate’s reputation so they don’t win the election. This is just a dirty game played by my opponent to degrade me and my party in society. The question isn’t whether it’s true, the question is whether you believe it or not. After centuries of presidential elections, are the citizens of the US going to fall for this dirty act? If this is supposed to be a joke, it’s not a funny joke, because jokes are supposed to make you laugh. The truth is nothing but a feeling that something is true, well I tell you all today that what you are hearing is not true Allusions: heedless, God, supernumerary, hue, Yankee, frittered, fluctuating, delusions, sentinels… I liked reading this piece because it talked about everything i agree with. He went to the woods to “see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear;” which i would strongly agree with. I mean, i wouldn’t go to the woods but i understand the point he was trying to make with this sentence. “Still we live meanly, like ants; though the fable tells us that we were long ago changed into men;” I liked the metaphor he used to compare our lives with ants. We, as human beings things that our lives are worth a lot more then any animal. But if you think about it, if you aren’t living to the fullest then you are no more than an ant. Also he uses good rhetorical questions such as when he talks about the railroads. “Did you ever think what those sleepers are that underlie the railroad?” I like how he emphasizes on the fact that we don’t really appreciate things in life and we live meaningless lives, in hopes of eventually gaining something in our lives. Also throughout his piece, he uses one word to mean two things. Like the word “sleepers,” first he uses it to mean the people who sleep on the train. And later in that part he uses it to refer to the people that made the railroad, and died on the railroad. So first he uses it to refer to the people who sleep on trains and later to refer to the people that have died working on the railroad. I also like how he infers the fact that technology is taking us too far, because i also think that as well. We are getting far ahead of our selves when it comes to science and technology. I read both “Excerpts from Enough: Staying Human in an Engineered Age” by Bill McKibben and “Reinventing Humanity” by Ray Kurzwell. I thought both of these articles were very interesting and probably my favorite reading since the year started. I have always wondered where science will take us in the future, and to think about what McKibben and Kurzwell say…it’s kind of scary. I didn’t get to read all of Kurzwell’s piece, because it was really long, but i think i got the basic idea about what he was trying to so. I thought his idea about exponential growth was very interesting and thought provoking. “In thinking about the future, few people take into consideration the fact that human scientific progress is exponential: It expands by repeatedly multiplying by a constant…rather than linear; that is, expanding by repeatedly adding a constant” (Kurzwell). I would have to agree with him that we are changing too fast and some of the changes we are making go unnoticed. He also states in his articles that, “Exponential growth starts out slowly and virtually unnoticeably, but beyond the knee of the curve it turns explosive and profoundly transformative” (Kurzwell). I really wonder where all this change is going to take us. McKibben’s article was also very fascinating to read. I was really into it and was finished reading it before i knew it. I would have to agree with him on about all his points. He creates a sense of fear as he looks into our future. I can’t understand why anybody want to alter their baby’s genes and make them “better.” This is when i think science is getting too far ahead of itself, it’s as if it’s taking over NATURE. “Attempts at genetically engineering human beings in the womb, designing our children to make them smarter, prettier, ‘better.’” This articles lays out the facts right in front of you, and really makes you think about “where is the world going?” I noticed that both articles use rhetorical questions, to get their audience to think about what they are saying, instead of just blabbing on about their topic. As always, it’s crucial that you make some kind of common ground with your audience. I think both articles do a good job of trying to connect to their audience. McKibben used a anecdote, that I’m sure all of us can relate to, “”What will you have done to your newborn when you have installed into the nucleus of every one of her billions of cells a purchased code that will pump out proteins designed to change her? You will have robbed her of the last possible chance of understanding her life.” When he mentions the word life and says that it will be meaningless, I think it really gets to people. We as human beings have the tendency to believe that the world revolves around us and our lives are the center of the universe. So, for our lives to become meaningless is like the biggest catastrophe that can occur. On the other hand, Kurzwell says that, “Our forebears expected what lay ahead of them to resemble what they had already experienced, with few exceptions. Because they lived during a time when the rate of technological innovation was so slow as to be unnoticeable, their expectations of an unchanged future were continually fulfilled.” I thought these sentences were very thought provoking, as to think about what we have done and how we are really getting far ahead of ourselves. I can kind of relate science and technology to a toy, you play with it as much as you can, day and night, everyday, you keep on playing until it breaks. I don’t want this technology and science “toy” to break soon, and ruin our lives or as McKibben says, make them meaningless. I was definitely more convinced by he second article by McKibben, becuase it was pretty straight forward and very easy to understand. The other one, sometimes went on and on about things. But this one was straight forward and to the point. I wish he had written more, and i am really now interested in finding out more about this topic. I am already against test experiment on animals, and so to try to make a unborn child “better,” by experimenting on a human, is just out of the question. Let life be life. Don’t turn us all into robots. If live is about diversity and being different, then by doing this we are running away from this goal. Risks are one aspect of life that we try to stay away from. They can either change your life for the better or for the worse. Risks are not only a fearful aspect in our general life but also in business and economy. From looking at our past we can see all the ups and downs in our economy. For example, the Great Depression in the 1930’s. Taking chances at something new, especially in business, can either help or really harm your status. But before one decides to take a risk, it would be a good idea to consider some aspects that might contribute to the improvement or destruction of your business plan. Some factors to consider before transferring a nonindigenous species from another country are, prior history, user review, and other research. It’s important to know the history of the specie you are importing from another country. If it has caused destruction in the past, then this might be something to take into consideration. In source A, shows trees that have been killed by insects that were accidentally imported to the US. If we had looked at their past history to check what they have done then we might have not had this problem. If we had done some research on it’s history, it might have saved us a lot of money. Another factor to consider before one decides to import species from another place is to get feedback from people who have already tried this technique. This could save you not only time but also a lot of money. If you find out that the specie kills what you are trying to get rid of but at the same time is damaging something else, then you might have to reconsider your plan. The cane toads, started eating everything instead of just the beetles. So this way, user feedback could help you a lot in making the right decision. Furthermore, another aspect that could help you is research about the species in general. It’s a good idea to understand their habitats. Also, some species might not be able to adjust to the new environment so in this case they might take some actions that could alter your findings. Source B, discussed SARS and how it was transferred over to other countries. The fact that researchers were able to figure out that importing civets might increase SARS cases, definitely required some reserach. Also the fact that people suffering from the same disease can die in one country and recover from it in another country, shows that it’s important to look at their background information and environment. Overall, it’s important to look into the past of the species you are trying to import. Some species might cause great destruction in your business. All these sources suggest that research is a very important step in deciding whether to import a specie or not. If one cannot get past user feedback, then at least one can do some research about the specie and their environment. Ideas… 1. Show a old person writing, then younger person typing on type writer, then younger person, typing on old computer, then another one, typing on flat screen, and last person typing on laptop, and then close up on laptop, which says “innovation.” 2. Show clips of technology through time. start from back and white and slow music then come to present and fast music. 3. same as #2, except make older ideas go by slow and then as we progress towards present, they start to speed up, and then we can go into the future and ideas will be even fast, and at the end, we’ll have 1 slide that says “innovation…it’s contagious.” 4. Show a really old man, middle aged man, a young man, and teenager, and a boy working on something together. 5. start of showing a person writing on paper with feather pen, and then they mail the letter, the letter flies and turns into an e-mail and by the time somebody gets it, it’s in html form. Why? While reading this article, I felt like slapping this guy and telling him that HE COMES FROM A WOMAN HIMSELF! It’s strange how we can come from women, live with women, and yet say so many disgusting things about them. All I can say to answer his false accusations against women is that, Now what does this guy have to say about that? I mean, he really disgusted me by the comments he made about women. We are less intelligent because we have smaller brains, because we have smaller bodies then men? That’s odd. That’s the most biased thing I’ve ever heard. I really hope God makes him a woman in his next life. I’m seriously too mad right now to even speak right about what he wrote. But I know that once I do start writing something back to him, it mite end up being two or three times longer then his. Respect! – Doesn’t look like he has that, because he’s a hypocrite! Annie Dillard vs. Virginia Wolff One thing I really liked about Wolff’s pasage was how she could make the story of a moth dying seem bigger then it actually was. In the beginning she refers to the life outside and then again towards the end. It was strange how she can make something that doesn’t even matter in OUR lives, seem like such a big event that has taken place. I guess, you can kind of take away the idea that life is worth too much, every single moment holds the same value as the next. One thing I did like about both essays was that they both had good diction and lots of detail about little things. For example, in Dillard’s essay, she described the moth as, “They would hiss and recoil, reeling upside down in the shadows among my cooking pans. Or they would singe their wings and fall, and their hot wings, as if melted, would stick to the first thing they touched- a pan, a lid, a spoon-so that the snagged moths could struggle only in tiny arcs, unable to flutter free.” Also, in Wolff’s essay, she describes the dying month as, “He was trying to resume his dancing, but seemed either so stiff or so awkward that he could only flutter to the bottom of the window–pane; and when he tried to fly across it he failed.” Both of these sentences make the moths seem much more lively then anybody can imagine. It kind of takes you back to the idea of how even the smallest things matter in our life, because it’s those small things that make up the big ones. What is Wikipedia good for? Should we shun it as a repository of illiterate know-nothings (unless it’s about Klingon) or is it the greatest explosion of knowledge in the Modern World, the beginning of the realization of the dream–the sum of human knowledge available to everyone everywhere at all times. Is that even a good thing? Give some good examples from your reading and experience to back up your points. Wikipedia is really good for when you just want to get the main idea about a certain topic. Wikipedia might not be reliable for details, like dates, places, and peoples names, but it can be good to give you some sense of what the topic is about. I usually like to start my research projects with wikipedia because it will give me good background information about my topic. What do you think of technology and science? — Technology and science play a big in understanding our world and the people and animals in it. I personally think technology to an extent is getting a little out of hand. It’s almost as if we are doing as much as we can to keep ourselves from leaving our houses. We would rather do our chores sitting at home either in front of the computer or another machine instead of going out of our houses. Technology that doesn’t encourage human beings to be overly lazy is good but things like online shopping, online text books, and online classes are getting a little out of hand. Science on the other hand is progressing to discover more about our world. Well science alone is good but when it pairs up with technology, laziness comes into play again. We need scientists to study our world and people and help us understand each other. We wouldn’t e here without science and technology as well, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves that we get too out of control. Is science (and the scientific method) the best way to look at the world? - - It’s not about whether it’s the best way because each person has their own way of looking at the world. Science is just one of the ways to look at the world. The scientific method is an excellent way to break things down and research further into detail about things. There are other ways to look at the world as well, for example: psychology. Even though the scientific method is used in psychology as well, it focuses on mental and behavioral processes and thoughts instead of facts and theories. Do you wish you could change your relationship with technology? Do you think that the world would be better off if it were more scientific? Explain with examples. - - Technology for me is a way to advance and go forward in life. But I don’t want to go ahead in life that I miss out on being “human.” Laptops and phones have becomes such an important part of my life that it seems as if I wouldn’t be able to survive without them. I think we are good enough with technology and , so I don’t think the world would be better of if it were more scientific. It seems as though if we were to be scientific, we might as well be like robots. Look at the world through your own eyes not through a robot. The “Death of a Moth,” was probably the most detailed piece of writing i have ever read. What the author wrote in 4-5 paragraphs, could have been said in a single sentence. I think it’s reasonable to write with this much detail in a short essay or passage, but if you were writing a book or a really long article, then you might lose your audience after a while. Giving detail is one thing but giving too much detail that it overwhelms your audience is another.”The body relaxed, and instantly grew stiff. The struggle was over. The insignificant little creature now knew death.” I really liked the way these few sentences were put together, instead of just saying ‘the moth died’. It describes more in detail and somewhat from another perspective. “After a time, tired by his dancing apparently…he was trying to resume his dancing, but seemed either so stiff or so awkward that he could only flutter to the bottom of the window–pane.” I think this was a really good way to describe the motion or actions of the moth. The word dancing adds more depth and a different view to the moth. Instead of saying it was moving or shaking, he used the word dancing. Obviously the word dancing adds more character to the moth and makes it seem more then just an insect. Which boosts the credibility of the author as well because most people wouldn’t give a little insect any words of respect. Also the way he refers to the outside world in the beginning and then again towards the ends shows exactly how small the problem he is talking about is compared to the outside world. It’s almost as if things can either gain or lose importance depending on what they are being compared to. It’s also nice how he starts off with a little bit of detail about the outside world and then refers back to it at the end. If he had just talked about it in the beginning it might have just left the reader wondering why they even started referring to the outside world in the first place. It was pretty easy to figure out which essay deserved a good score and which ones didn’t do too well. The first essay was obviously the best one because it seemed the most thorough and thoughtful. Instead of talking about what was said in the essay, this essay talked about what was said and how it was said and furthermore how they way they said helped what they said. Essay two was more of a “normal” type of essay that more people would right. So I guess the point of taking this class is to get beyond writing the normal essays. The third essay was definitely the worst one because it’s not long enough and isn’t done. When a essay isn’t complete, it might make the reader thing that you had a lot to write even if that was your last sentence. |

When I first saw this picture I was a bit shocked to see that a symbol of freedom and independence could also be used to symbolize violence. I think it’s very disgraceful to use your flag as a weapon because it makes you a hypocrite. The background information on the picture was helpful because when someone sees this picture they would definitely wonder why someone would do this and where this was. After reading the explanation about it, it becomes easier to understand why this could have happened. It won the Pulitzer Prize because even though the action in the picture definitely doesn’t deserve any awards. Also I thought it was interesting how a candidate could use this picture as a persuasion technique today. This is just one scene out of the whole issue of bussing. It’s clear that most of the attention in the picture is focused on the flag itself. The man being attacked seems to have fallen back into another man. Also the horizontal line of the flag pole adds more attention to the flag because the rest of the flag consists of mostly parallel lines (buildings and floor). I think this picture is very powerful in that it doesn’t only have the victim and the attacker, it seems like a snapshot out of an action filled moment.
She definitely much more then what out first look at her might tell us. She’s covering her face… a way to get away from western thoughts? Or is it a way to escape terrorism in her village? Or is she trying to keep away from the sick and dirty. The face that her eyes are right in the middle of the picture add more depth and attraction to her eyes which seem to hold more then we might assume. Her eyes aren’t dark brown or black which many people are used to seeing since she is Middle Eastern. But instead she has light green eyes which can clearly show that it’s time for us to step out of our preconceptions of people. We are almost forced to stick to one idea and only that idea. It’s time to look beyond the typical idea of Muslims. Does this innocent face look like a terrorist to you. If one apple on the tree is bad, it doesn’t necessarily mean the whole tree is bad. Her hands are covering a part of her face which could should strength and power. She isn’t disabled or being tied down to anything. She has the power that hands hold and can possibly stand up if she feels the need to. She has a very innocent and desperate look in her eyes, which attracts the viewer even more. She seems as if she is out of place and is very confused, maybe on a hunt for her identity. Also she seems like a village girl and it’s hard for girls in the village to be independent and find their true identity. She seems like a typical girl because she has no make up, wrinkly scarf, uncombed hair, and short simple nails. So… simplicity can sometimes say much more than something big and bold.
but the process of obtaining such a degree it takes a lot of time and effort. Some even fail at trying to obtain such degrees but others, the dedicated and responsible ones, make their way through school and obtain that degree. Essentially to acquire a career a person must have been devoted and passionate about what they were going to do or are doing. If so, is going to school a career? Working at home? Living in a nursing home? Staying at home as a
When we realize what life is about and that the meaning of life is to live in the present is when we have a defining. In other words, life after retirement is a career because this is the time to do everything you have always wanted to do because there is nothing to plan for. But then again, there are some unfortunate people who still suffer from insanity and start to planning their funeral, their casket, their gravestone, location where they will be buried, people who might come, etc. If this isn’t insanity then what is?
